Making the Most of Change
Shared Purpose
The dynamism of an organization is a result of the creative tension between its mission, the values of its people, and its current reality. A powerful dynamic requires that people understand the mission, feel an alignment with it, and have an accurate understanding of the organization's current situation.
Meaningful Goals
Meaningful goals make the connection between individual purpose and organizational mission. When people understand what they are responsible for, and how that work benefits both the organization and their personal well being, intrinsic motivation is possible. This is why it is essential that all employees have some meaningful involvement in the goal-setting process.
Complementary Roles
Work identity, responsibility, and team relationships are defined through one's role. Well-crafted roles integrate the strengths of individuals, unit goals, and team inter- dependencies. A sense of mutual expectations and cooperation is then possible.
Effective Processes
Organizations tend to be disfunctional when the processes, or methods whereby work is done, are ineffective. In such a setting, it's easy to lose sight of what's essential and to become lost in a reactive sea of urgencies. To be truly effective, organizations must identify and continuously refine the processes through which they serve their customers.
Supportive Relationships
The foundation of a flexible, resilient organization is a level of trust among co-workers that allows for risk taking, learning, and interdependence. TrustÐwhich is built on mutual respect and understandingÐcan be directly taught through diversity training, skilled dialogue, and conflict resolution skills.
Personal Mastery
A healthy organization can only be made of healthy individuals who are guided by a personal sense of purpose and the ability to be positively energized by stress, to overcome negativity, and to understand one's own need for self renewal.
